3 out of 5 stars Didn't work for us   February 27, 2010

I have spent SO much time researching, shopping, and testing youth seats and boosters and the only thing that I have found that seems to be a universal truth on the matter is that different seats work differently for different kids and different cars. After reading the reviews of TONS of these things I narrowed it down to the Evenflo Big Kid DLX, the Graco Turbobooster, and The First Years Compass. The First Years Compass looked great and got really good customer reviews but b/c it was not sold in stores nearby I would have had to order it in order to try it out which would also mean that I would have to pay to ship it back if it didn't work. I was pretty sure that it would be a good seat for us but since going with it would mean that I couldn't put all three of my kids on the middle bench of our '95 Odyssey (a definite downside) I decided to look at some models that would fit alongside my two Britax Roundabouts. This took me to the Evenflo Big Kid DLX and the Graco Turbobooster, both of which are narrower than the Compass. I went to Walmart and purchased both seats and brought them home to try. Based on looks and perceived superior comfort I gravitated toward the Evenflo. So much so that I set it up, installed it and never even opened the Graco box. We had the seat in the car for a few days and despite noticing that the position of the seatbelt on my son's neck wasn't great we continued to use it. He was excited to be in a big boy seat and claimed that he was comfortable. (He just turned 4, is 40 lbs. and 40 inches, and when seated his rump to shoulder height is 15 inches.) We live in a small town and the longest trip we took in those first few days was 10 minutes. Well, yesterday we were in the car most of the day and we discovered that this seat (the Evenflo Big Kid DLX Booster) just isn't going to work for us. The position of the belt (the guide is at an angle) caused it to cut into my sons neck leaving a visible mark/bruise, and the extra padding on the headrest was a little too padded and ended up pushing my son's head down causing muscle pain in his neck and shoulders. Then, when it couldn't get any worse, he fell asleep on the way home and fell forward suspended entirely by the seatbelt (that probably didn't help the bruise on his neck!) When we got home my sweet boy (who rarely complains about anything) said, "Mommy, tomorrow can I have my old car seat back? This new one hurts me." So today we tried the Graco Turbobooser and I am happy to report that it is a MUCH better fit for our son! The angle of the seatbelt guides allowed the belt to lay perfectly across his shoulder, the head rest has the perfect amount of padding so as to allow for a comfortable resting of his head, AND the Graco had two positions...erect and slightly reclined (note: the back of the booster must be flush with the vehicle seatback so if your vehicle seat can't recline I don't think the booster seat can either). Tonight my son had no problem sleeping comfortably in the reclined position (well, probably not as comfortably as he did in his Britax Roundabout but as comfortably as one can in a booster.) SO, all this to say, the Graco Turbobooster definitely worked better for us!

4 out of 5 stars Nice seat   February 1, 2010

My daughter loves this seat. She thinks she's a big girl now and loves to play with the night lights on it. I love it for short distances but for long trips it not so comfy. Her head falls forward and she tilts all the way over. You can't recline it like her old seat so we just switch seats for long trips. It's very light and portable though. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Comfy for the kid   October 6, 2009

Booster is light and easy to move around, simple to buckle up, cleans easy, looks good. My 4y.o. daughter thinks it is comfy and her legs dont fall asleep on long drives (good padding), loves the snack/toy holders and lights. My only complaint is her head does bobble when sleeping so we prop up a pillow on the door for her to lean agianst- thing is, I bobble when I sleep in the car too.

5 out of 5 stars Finally . . . a Booster Seat with Lights!   October 4, 2009

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R19WDK7QS02QQI We recently purchased three of these seats for our three oldest grandchildren. They had outgrown their infant restraint seats, but regular booster seats did not provide enough support or protection. After reading reviews, we found Evenflo's Big Kid's DLX Booster Seat to be a good purchase, plus Amazon's free shipping was available. We had three of these seats shipped for free to our grandchildren. They are proud of their seats and they especially like the activity lights on each side of the seat. Their parents like the practical microfiber covering in a neutral color, cactus (a/k/a taupe a/k/a beige). We like the seats because if the grandchildren fall asleep during long rides, they can rest their heads on the side rests of the seats. Be sure and have AAA batteries on hand because your child or grandchild will want to turn on the activity lights "right now." An added attraction is that the box the seat is shipped in can be used for a tiny playhouse!

4 out of 5 stars great seat   October 3, 2009

I had bought a similar model at Target and ordered this one. Comparing at home, this one was made with a better quality fabric that looks like it'll hold up much better and the seat had more padding. My daughter loves this seat and it's two cup and snack holders. Only complaint, no head support when she falls asleep. Her head and upper body just flop over. She still sleeps but it looks terribly uncomfortable. I think we'll try one of those u-shaped neck pillows and see if that helps. The lights are ingenious, don't know why other models don't have them.
